Rock Climbing Levels

Which rock climbing level are you? Not sure? No worries. We will make sure you are placed in the appropriate group with others who share similar experience and goals. We keep our group sizes small (no larger than a 4:1 ratio) so we can customize the learning from your previous experience and goals. When you register for one of our women’s rock climbing programs, you can choose between one of the following rock climbing levels:

Rock Climbing Level 1: Beginner

For those with minimum or no rock experience.
This rock climbing level is for the person who has never rock climbed in a gym or outside before. This is a great introduction clinic that will help build a basic foundation of rock climbing skills. You will learn:
a. Equipment, knots and top rope belaying
b. Lowering and rappelling
c. Focus on footwork and technique for efficient movement on the rock
d. Learn how to recognize a properly set-up climbing anchor

Rock Climbing Level 2: Advanced-Beginner

For those with some previous experience who are ready to refine knowledge and advanced skills.
This rock climbing level is for the person who has climbed in a gym or outside a few times but does not feel confident with the basic skills needed to climb outside. The goal of this clinic is to be solid on 5.6-5.7 climbs and feel ready to move to the more challenging terrain. You will learn:
a. Review of knots, top rope belaying and rappelling
b. Learn how to lead belay
c. Focus on footwork, technique for more challenging climbs
d. How to set up a simple top rope anchor

Rock Climbing Level 3: Intermediate

For those who can top rope and are ready to build on those skills and learn to lead climb or try out alpine climbing.
We rock climbing level will focus on gaining an excellent foundation of skills and knowledge to help you feel ready to lead on rock. You will be mock leading, placing gear on a top rope. Your guide will evaluate your gear placements and provide feedback. The goal of the clinic is to help you feel confident with rock climbing gear, anchor systems and a variety of belay and rappel methods. You will learn:
a. Lead climbing strategies such as placing and clipping protection, rope management etc.
b. How to be a second on multi-pitch climbs
c. Placing gear and building anchors
d. Cleaning anchors to rappel/lower off

Rock Climbing Level 4: Advanced

For those who have some leading experience and/or want to learn about multi-pitch climbing or alpine climbing.
This rock climbing level is perfect for the person who is ready to lead single pitch climbs or take on multi-pitch climbs. The clinic will focus on lead climbing skills and multi-pitch transitions*. This includes anchors; belay techniques, multi-pitch rappels, and basic rescue skills. The goal of this clinic is to help you leave the nest and take on bigger objectives. You will also learn:
a. Review cleaning anchors
b. Conserving energy, resting, and reading sequences, strategies for redpointing/on-sighting
c. Practice leading with top rope backup; get critiqued on gear placement and overall safety
d. How to be a second on multi-pitch climbs*

*Multi-Pitch skills are program location dependent
