What to Bring to Red River Gorge

The Red River Gorge is spread out over the lush wooded forests and rolling hills of central Kentucky. The weather can vary from warm and sticky to cold and damp, and if you’re lucky you’ll be graced with crisp fall days perfect for sending temps. In the morning you will find everything covered in dew and condensation. Seriously…it can be chilly in the morning/evening or hotter than Hades and sweating your butt off…be prepared for either. To help set yourself up for success, we suggest you bring the following.


– Tank top/sports bra

– T-shirt (synthetic or cotton)

– Lightweight long sleeved shirt /sun shirt

– Midweight synthetic top

– Wind/rain shell jacket

– Light down or synthetic puffy coat

– Lightweight synthetic long underwear bottoms

– Climbing Shorts
 (please no short running shorts or short daisy duke style shorts)

– Pants (cotton or synthetic)

– Synthetic Socks

– Underwear

– Warm Hat

– Sticky rubber approach shoes or running shoes


– Toiletries

– Hand sanitizer

– Sunglasses

– Sun screen

– Bug spray

– SPF lip balm

– Toilet paper with 2 zip lock bags

– Personal first aid kit (to take care of blisters and minor pain)


– Helmet

– Harness

– Rock shoes

– Chalk bag

– Climbing Chalk

– Backpack (35 liters capacity minimum)

– 3 water bottles (or up to 3 liters capacity)

– Headlamp, extra batteries

– 2 locking carabiners

– 1 ATC or guide ATC style belay device with locking carabiner

– 1 48inch sling/double length sling (nylon preferred)

– 1 roll of climbing tape

– Leather palm belay gloves

-Small notebook and pencil

– Grigri (if you have one) with locking carabiner

– Trekking poles with rubber tips (Optional but recommended if you have knee or back problems.)
