Our New River Gorge Climbing Clinic provides a fun, safe, and encouraging climbing-learning environment led by the best female guides in the industry.

The New River Gorge National River is located in Southern West Virginia and has an endless amount of single pitch sport and trad climbs for all levels. Many of the cliffs have easy top access so you can learn how to set up a top-rope anchor so you can top-rope climb safely with your climbing partners.

One hundred foot high, Nuttall Sandstone cliffs run through the heart of the park, making 1800 rock climbs with amazing views of the river which snakes through the bottom of the gorge. It’s known as the Grand Canyon of the East and has some of the best rock quality you will ever lay your hands on. There is no shortage of rock at Chicks New River Gorge, WV Climbing Clinic.

Transportation is not included, please see the New River Gorge Climbing Clinic Logistics and Directions. If you want to stay at a hotel please see our suggested lodging list and make reservations on your own. mixed climbing at Skylight, Camp Bird Road, Ouray, Colorado

2021 Dates TBD

Learn mixed climbing in Ouray, Colorado from the most experienced and qualified female guides in the industry.

Mixed Climbing is climbing on steep rock (with little or no ice) using ice climbing gear- crampons and ice tools.

Precise moves and the ability to make long reaches with the extra length of ice climbing tools is especially fun for women who can often feel height challenged.

It’s ridiculously amazing to be able to use the tiniest of holds to stand on or to pull hard on. Every time I do a mixed clinic, I learn more.” –Sandy Fee, Chicks Ouray, Colorado Mixed Climbing participant.

“First things first!”

Co-Owner Chicks Climbing and Skiing, Kitty Calhoun, first mixed climbed in 1985 when she was on Mt. Denali’s Cassin Ridge at 20,000 feet and carrying a 40 lb pack!

But it wasn’t until ten years later when Kitty started practicing modern, mixed climbing that she found it did wonders for her climbing technique.

(Read more about climbing smoothly on Kitty’s blog, Mixed Climbing Quick Tips – How To Climb Smoothly.

Modern Mixed climbing is a particularly exciting climbing challenge.

Technical moves like pushing off small crystals with front points, reaching for and hooking small divots, relaxing and lifting the foot to another crystal are the basics of all climbing techniques, but on steroids.

mixed climbing moving from an ice blob to dry rock, camp bird road, Ouray, ColoradoModern mixed climbing can help you improve as a climber more than any other kind of climbing. Using ice axes and crampons for purchase increases your sense of possibility,

Sharpening

  • balance,
  • commitment
  • and focus.
  • Plus, remember the monkey bars?

It turns out that hanging around on steep rock, practicing dynamic moves is very fun!

Mixed climbing evokes a childlike sense of joy in discovering potential.

Among the many advantages to learning from a master like Kitty is that she has a plan. “First things first.” Then, second things. Then third…

Read more about Kitty’s progressive climbing strategy in her Blog, How Do You Know When You Know Enough?

Chicks believes in building skills progressively and comprehensively.

The foundation for sound decision-making and climbing-confidence is to step up on a growing set of skills.

Chicks’ Ouray, Colorado | Mixed Climbing clinic is a “second-step” course. We recommend that you take at least our Ouray, Colorado | Ice Climbing 3-Day course first.

Intro to Backcountry Skills – 2021 Dates TBD

silverton avalanche school

Join Chicks and the Silverton Avalanche School for our 1-day intro to backcountry skiing skills clinic focused on learning the ups and downs of backcountry skiing and splitboarding.  This day out is designed for both newcomers to the backcountry and seasoned skiers and riders looking for a tune-up on technique to make backcountry travel more efficient and enjoyable.

We’ll focus more on the technical aspects of backcountry touring but also delve into terrain assessment and avalanche awareness. We’ll meet you where you’re at with your current skill level but cover the basics of how to use avalanche rescue equipment, how to perform transceiver checks at the trailhead, how to recognize avalanche terrain and how to travel conservatively with a group through avalanche terrain.

Red Mountain Pass provides an outstanding classroom for us to spend a full day out in the field in moderate terrain. Starting at 11,300 feet we step onto our boards close to the tree line with both fair and foul weather options to choose from throughout the day. With some of the most stunning scenery and largest avalanche paths visible anywhere this venue is a goldmine of a classroom for beginners and seasoned veterans alike.

Our uphill focus will be on setting a good skin track, establishing a sustainable all-day pace, methods for efficient skinning and the subtleties of different kick turn techniques.  We’ll seek out fresh tracks for the down but teach you how to ski typical backcountry crud that is variable and challenging. Armed with these skills you’ll have more confidence and be less prone to injury.

Our Chicks Guide will share their decision-making process with you from the day’s start to finish, giving you insight into how to find “the goods”, how to stay comfortable in the backcountry, how to manage clothing and equipment in adverse conditions and tips for keeping your energy up and calories in.  They’ll be your coach, instructor and champion to get you out in front, making fresh tracks up and down. And true to all Chicks programs the fun factor and supportive nature of our trips puts everyone at ease and ensures a good time.

We meet at 7:00 a.m. in Ouray at the Guide Garage for coffee, get our equipment sized up and sorted out before our van shuttle picks us up for the stunning drive up Hwy 550 to Red Mountain Pass.  We’ll end the day with a van shuttle back down to the Guide Garage where we’ll celebrate and high five over Happy Hour hors-d’oeuvres and a beverage.
