Learn Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain
In 1962, Silverton Avalanche School was founded in Silverton, just 23 miles south of Ouray.
In 2017, Chicks partnered with SAS to bring state-of-the-art, avalanche education with the added advantage of being all-women.
Why is women-only programing an added advantage?
Women feel more comfortable asking questions in all-female groups.
They thrive when they ask questions, voice their thoughts and engage with other women who are passionate about the outdoors.
And, when people have more fun, they learn more!
Fun and sass are always huge parts of our programs.
Chicks | AIARE Level 1 with the Silverton Avalanche School is a 3-day avalanche course.
- Learn the key elements of sound decision-making in avalanche terrain.
- Meets American Avalanche Association and the International Commission for Alpine Rescue (ICAR) Guidelines
- Valuable input
- Instant feedback
- Vital insight

Chicks Instructors Help Enhance Critical-Thinking Skills
Many of our instructors are true avalanche professionals. When they’re not teaching, they’re responsible for mitigating avalanche hazard in Class A avalanche terrain in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, one of the most dangerous snowpacks on earth.
Other instructors are equally qualified through decades of climbing experience and/or guiding certification through the American Mountain Guides Association.
Our goal is that you can make decisions in avalanche terrain with greater accuracy and success.
So grateful to be instructed with compassion, understanding, patience, and experiential wisdom. I will definitely be looking into your additional courses and hopefully participating in more skill trainings.
Much Love, Joy, and SNOW!!!
