Nepal Women's Trek and Project Visits: Fall 2010

Asian Trekking
Join Kim Reynolds, Co-founder of the dZi Foundation and Chicks with Picks, on an adventure of a lifetime. This unique journey combines the magical elements of Nepal’s local hospitality, dZi Foundation projects, trekking and site seeing. Kim’s 24 years of experience in Asia offers an insiders view into the country and culture that is unparalleled.
The trip begins in Nepal’s ancient Kingdom of Kathmandu, visiting historical sites and dZi Foundation projects such as The Friendship House and Nutritional Rehabilitation Center. After two days acclimatizing in this enchanted city, we will head into the Solu Kumbu (the lower, less traveled, Everest Region) for a rigorous trek in the terraced hills deep in the heart of Sherpa Country. We begin at Chiwang Monastery for the colorful Mani Rimdu masked dance festival at full moon. From here, “the local hospitality tour begins!” We will trek through local villages where Kim had a Sherpa wedding ceremony in 1997 and is the site of the first dZi Foundation project. Don’t be surprised if we are invited to have tea with the Head Lama, attend a blessing ceremony just for our group or eat boiled potatoes in a local’s home. Our main objective will be to climb Pike Peak at 13,400 ft (no crampons necessary) for an incredible view of Mount Everest and the surrounding Himalayan Mountains. After our trek, we will fly back to Kathmandu for our last day surrounded by the city’s magic.
Kim has been traveling to Nepal since 1986 leading treks, climbing peaks and giving back to the local people. In the early 90’s Kim led trips for the Colorado Outward Bound School and Above the Clouds Trekking into the remote regions of the country. In 1998, she was the Expedition Leader on 24,000 foot Pumori Peak (daughter of Everest) and helped raise $80,000 for a small safe house in Kathmandu for girls at risk of being sold into the sex trade. This opened the door to giving back in and even larger capacity through Co-Founding The dZi Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to promoting education, health and welfare in Himalayan Communities. Since then, she has been leading volunteer groups for dZi Foundation projects and treks in Nepal, Sikkim and Ladakh, India. www.dzifoundation.org
